Knitters invited to brighten up a wall with yarn

Beaker ButtonFibre craft shop Beaker Button have come up with a colourful competition that’s caught our eye. The shop is situated in the lovely Fairground Craft and Design Centre in Weyhill, Andover, which hosted one of the UK’s largest sheep fairs until the 1950s. The whole site is enclosed by a two-metre high white chalk and plaster wall, running for 136 metres along the adjacent Weyhill Road. It’s the kind of wall that a graffiti artist would have a blast covering, so Beaker Button’s invitation to knitters to help cover it in yarn is particularly apt.

“The rules are simple,” says Jen Best from Beaker Button. “Each piece should measure 50cmx50cm and be made from yarn. You can knit, crochet or weave, and you can embellish with whatever you like, as long as your base is yarn.”

Each entry costs £2.00, with the proceeds going to the local Riding for the Disabled group, who the Fairground are supporting this year.

“The winners will be chosen by us and a representative from the RDA,” says Jen.

First prize will be £100 voucher for Beaker Button. Second prize will be £50 voucher, and third prize will be £25.

Beaker Button White WallThe competition will run from 01 April till 31 July, so you have plenty of time to think about your design.

The finished piece will be displayed for photographs in August and then turned into throws, to auctioned at Beaker Button’s Michaelmas Fair in September.
